Christmas Market in Mannheim
XX November – XX December 2020, daily from 11:00 – 21:00
Mannheim’s Christmas market is one of Germany’s oldest, biggest and best, attracting many thousands of visitors each year. Many of the visitors are local, but some have traveled a considerable distance to enjoy the market.
The Mannheim Christmas market is centrally located, offering Christmas flair all around the historic water tower (Wasserturm) in midst the equally historic Jugendstil gardens.
The glow and sparkle of lights and Christmas decorations, the scent of tasty seasonal food, and nostalgic Christmas music from the historic fairground organ all contribute to a special festive atmosphere.
Around 200 booths are lovingly decorated to look like little wooden houses where visitors will find a huge selection of gifts including handcrafts from all over the world, seasonal decorations and delicious food and drinks. There are carved wooden cribs, glassware, silver jewelry from Asia, African carvings made from coconut wood or ebony, woolen pullovers, socks and hats, cashmere scarves, sheepskin slippers, and much, much more. For children there are soft cuddly toys, wooden toys, building blocks and games. Christmas lights, lanterns, and candles as well as smoking wooden figures and aromatic oil lamps add to to the festive atmosphere.
Children are invited to try their handicraft skills to make Christmas trees and angels out of paper on the stage, cut out Christmas decorations from beeswax plates and dip candles in colored wax. There are great prizes to win at the Christmas Market Rally. Nicholas and his angel will also be on hand – for a free souvenir photo and with sweet surprises.
A stroll along narrow lanes known by romantic names such as Engelsgasse (Angel’s Lane) or Hirtengasse (Shepherd’s Lane) is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit. Children will enjoy merry-go-rounds, a giant wheel and a children’s railway. Another highlight is the 18-meter-high walk-in Christmas pyramid with a café on the first floor.
The sweet-toothed will appreciate fruit breads, marzipan, stollen and Christmas cookies, while gourmets will delight in delicacies such as freshly roasted coffee, green, black or fruit teas, truffle oil, salami, spices and sauces.
There are several charity stands offering homemade cookies or jam, or handcrafts, in aid of good causes.
The Mannheim Christmas market is easily reached by car from the highway, or it is only about 5 minutes’ walk from Mannheim’s central railway station. Buses stop at the stations: Wasserturm, Kunsthalle, Rosengarten and Am Friedensplatz. Cars can park in two underground garages directly below the Christmas market. Coaches on the Friedensplatz.
