Christmas Market in Mannheim

Mannheim’s Christmas market is one of Germany’s oldest, biggest and best, attracting many thousands of visitors each year. Many of the visitors are local, but some have traveled a considerable distance to enjoy the market.
The Mannheim Christmas Market begins on Monday, November 21. Starting at 11 a.m., the approximately 150 huts at the water tower will be open. The carousels will be turning, the huts will be offering a wide range of decorative and gift ideas, and Christmas scents will whet the appetite for sweet and savory treats. The Mannheim Christmas Market at the water tower will be officially opened at 6 p.m. on the stage.
The start of the 33-day Mannheim Christmas Market is all about tradition. The trombone choir of the Auferstehungskirche Mannheim, conducted by Sonja Nemet, will play classical Christmas carols. Pastor Dr. Maibritt Gustrau of the Protestant ChristusFriedensGemeinde (Christ’s Peace Parish) addresses the visitors with contemplative words on Advent on behalf of the Oststadt/Schwetzingerstadt district ecumenical group. Afterwards, Mayor Michael Grötsch officially opens the Christmas market with a speech.
The Mannheim Christmas market at the water tower offers traditional and modern Christmas decorations, handicrafts from all over the world, beautiful gifts, winter accessories and delicacies for gourmets. Children can make their rounds on two carousels, a giant children’s wheel and a children’s railroad. On Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m., Santa Claus invites visitors to a photo opportunity on the stage, organized by the Ladies’Circle Mannheim. Every day at 6 p.m., recreational artists, bands and clubs offer a colorful stage program. At the special stand “Informing and Helping” volunteers sell homemade goods in daily rotation for the benefit of social projects.
Stroll through the alleys of the huts and discover beautiful things to give as gifts and for your home: For almost five weeks, from November 21 until the day before Christmas Eve, the Mannheim Christmas Market at the water tower offers Christmas, warming, arts and crafts from all over the world, gift ideas and treats to eat and drink. This is the place to meet with family, friends and colleagues to stroll and enjoy. At the approximately 150 lovingly decorated huts you can choose traditional Christmas decorations, 3D Christmas cards, handmade necklaces, natural soaps and bath balls, vinegars and oils and much more. Those who want to fortify themselves right away have the choice between wraps, tarte flambée, steamed noodles, Baumstriezel and grilled specialties of all kinds and much more. The 18-meter-high walk-in Christmas pyramid houses a café on the second floor.
The organ of the over 130 year old tiered carousel attracts visitors with its festive and cheerful sounds. The giant children’s wheel, fairy tale carousel and children’s train are popular with the little ones. On the stage at the water tower, choirs, music ensembles, clubs and young people perform daily at 6 p.m., showing their skills from Christmas carols to drum orchestras, from children’s circus to street dance and tap dance. On the weekends, Santa Claus of Round Table Mannheim Hilfe e.V. invites children to a photo shoot in the afternoon. The proceeds will go to various children’s projects in Mannheim. At the special booth “Inform and Help” volunteers sell homemade goods for the benefit of social projects. With Christmas cookies and jams, handicrafts and handicrafts, for example, schools and institutions collect for learning and play materials.
The Mannheim Christmas market is a popular destination: groups of visitors come from various regions of Germany, from Switzerland and from France. Several light rail stops are in the immediate vicinity, and two underground parking garages are located directly below the market. Buses park at Friedensplatz, stopping places for getting on and off are located in Roonstraße opposite the Christmas market
The Mannheim Christmas market is easily reached by car from the highway, or it is only about 5 minutes’ walk from Mannheim’s central railway station. Buses stop at the stations: Wasserturm, Kunsthalle, Rosengarten and Am Friedensplatz. Cars can park in two underground garages directly below the Christmas market. Coaches on the Friedensplatz.
