The valley station of the cable car is located in the north of the city of Wiesbaden, very close to the Neroberg facilities. You can reach the excursion destination by bus, train or car. Enter the following address in your sat nav or navigation app: Wilhelminenstraße 51, 65193 Wiesbaden.

Wiesbaden at its most romantic

NerobergbahnEnjoy a unique experience – a ride on the Neroberg Mountain Railway, a historic monument! The oldest water ballast-driven cog-and-rack railway in Germany.

Since the service opened in 1888, Germany’s Year of the Three Emperors, the two original wagons – bearing Wiesbaden’s brightly coloured blue and yellow livery – have been rumbling up and down the Neroberg, Wiesbaden’s landmark mountain. The ride along the viaduct to the upper station is like a journey back in time.

At the top, there are a multitude of fun things to do for old and young alike. While some may bravely take on the heights of the high ropes course, others can choose more leisurely options such as going on a walk to the “Leichtweisshöhle”(white cave), visiting the Greek chapel or discovering the forest on the Neroberg adventure trail.

It is also possible to book guided tours at the Wiesbaden Marketing Department, which can include other Wiesbaden sights alongside the Neroberg attractions on demand.

Technology

The route is 440 metres long and has a maximum gradient of 25 percent – a challenge that the Nerobergbahn has tackled without incident since 1888 thanks to the Nerobergbahn’s ingenious means of propulsion. The carriage is filled at the hill station with up to 7,000 litres of water before travelling down a steel cable, pulling the other carriage up as it goes. Once the carriage reaches the bottom, the water is released and pumped back up to the top of the hill. The two carriages are connected by a steel cable measuring 452 metres in length. The driver of the carriage travelling downhill controls the speed. The whole thing is secured by cogwheels under the carriages, which bite into a gear rack attached to the tracks.
