It’s very Christmassy in Mainz!
Historical Christmas Market in Mainz since 1788
28. November to 23. December
On 28 November 2024, the historic Christmas market on the cathedral squares will open its doors. The individual, smaller ‘Mainz WinterZeit’ markets on Schillerplatz, Bahnhofsplatz, Hopfengarten and in the castle courtyard will also invite you to linger, stroll and enjoy. The Neuwintermarkt will once again take place on Neubrunnenplatz this year. In addition to the people of Mainz, tourists also appreciate the cosy Christmas and winter markets that are spread throughout the city.
Four ‘Mainzer WinterZeit’ markets
The castle courtyard, which has been a ‘Mainzer WinterZeit’ location since last year, will be transformed into a romantic winter wonderland again this year. The curling rink, the LUMEN-Alm, the carousel and the mulled wine and snack stands are looking forward to welcoming numerous visitors – families and groups in particular will find a suitable offer here. The unique atmosphere in the romantically illuminated castle courtyard is perfectly complemented by the musical Christmas programme organised by the Peter Cornelius Conservatory. Children’s choirs, brass bands and other bands entertain with Christmas melodies and songs. Here you can enjoy the pure Christmas spirit far away from the hustle and bustle.
The ‘Mainzer WinterZeit’ market on Schillerplatz enjoys great popularity every year – a place to feast and stroll. A special event takes place there on 6 December from 17:30: Everyone is invited to welcome St Nicholas at stand 11-16 (Husar family), who will be handing out small gifts to the children. The St Nicholas event is supported by ‘Mainzer WinterZeit’ partner Entega. New: The exhibitor ‘Hofmann Catering’ welcomes visitors to Schillerplatz with dumplings and mulled beer.
Shopping in the Christmas city
Mainz’s Old Town once again invites you to go Advent shopping. At the beginning of Augustinerstraße, the Hopfengarten invites you to linger. Hot drinks and tasty delicacies will be served here. All younger guests can look forward to the on-site carousel.
For all commuters travelling to and from Mainz by train or bus, the ‘Mainzer WinterZeit’ market in front of the entrance to the main railway station offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy an ‘after-work’ and/or ‘in-between mulled wine’ to bring the working day to a relaxed close or to make the most of a break.
Christmas magic –
Wonderful scents & pure romance
All Christmas and winter markets can be easily explored with the ‘GlühWeinWalk’ ticket. 7x mulled wines, 1x GlühGin, 2x meals at selected stands and a mainzgefühl mulled wine cup are included in this popular ticket. The tickets are available from Tuesday 19 November 2024 for 25 euros each at mainz STORE (Markt 17 / Domplatz), in the online shop https://www.mainz-store.com/shop/events/glhweinwalk-ticket/ and at various advance booking offices in the city’s retail, catering and hotel sectors. The ten participating stands are spread across all markets – a perfect opportunity to get to know the Christmas city of Mainz in its entirety. Purchased tickets are valid during the opening hours of the Christmas and winter markets. Further information is available at:

For all those looking for little surprises every day, there is the digital Advent calendar ‘Mainz Advent Moments’ on the Christmas City website. From 1 December, a little door opens every day, behind which not only small events at the city’s most beautiful locations await, but also generous discounts in shops and culinary specials in restaurants. This increases the anticipation of Christmas and strengthens the sense of community.
The guided tours on offer are also geared towards the Christmas atmosphere in the city. ‘Advent, Advent…’, “Christmassy Mainz Old Town” or “Mulled Wine Express” – these are all guided tours organised by the Mainz Tourist Guide Association this year and can be booked at
