Mainz Christmas Market

Historical Christmas Market in Mainz since 1788

30. November to 23. December 2023

Mainz Christmas Market Fair daily during Advent in the cathedral squares

The historic market square in Mainz is a blaze of lights. The air is scented with a Christmassy mixture of roast almonds, gingerbread, hot chestnuts and mulled wine. Large and small visitors gladly let themselves be enchanted by this pre-Christmas atmosphere. On a stroll through Mainz Christmas Fair, the stress and hectic pace of everyday life are quickly forgotten.

Against the imposing back-drop of the over a thousand year old Cathedral of St. Martin, showmen and craftsmen offer Christmas specialities and original presents. Visitors saunter leisurely past festively decorated stands, collecting many suggestions for fine Christmas presents in passing. Home-made Advent garlands and straw stars, Christmas tree decorations, wooden toys, carvings, ceramics, candles and much more are on offer.

A particularly vivid representation of the Christmas story is the hand-carved crib which has been standing in front of the Romanesque St. Gotthard’s chapel next to the cathedral since 1981. The life-sized figures made of limewood are unique in Europe and do not just impress children.

Also made of wood, but much larger still, is the eleven metre (36′) high Christmas pyramid from the Ore Mountains in Eastern Germany. Apart from the typical figures, such as an angel and Santa Claus, figures from the history of the city of Mainz are also represented. Thus Gutenberg and the Roman commander Drusus also go round in circles here. You cannot overlook the pyramid, it stands directly in the centre of Höfchen square.

One stand is specially reserved for handicrafts at the Christmas Fair. Here you can experience the creation of your Christmas present “live” and look over the shoulder of the artist-craftsmen and craftswomen at work. Perhaps, in the course of this, you will also be stimulated in one way or the other to become creative yourself.

If you visit Mainz Christmas Fair, you combine it with a shopping expedition in a festive atmosphere and experience the centre of Mainz in a blaze of light. Also enjoy a stroll through the romantic old city with its historic half-timbered facades bathed in festive light.
