Kaiserslautern Classics Showcases Automotive Treasures for the City’s Anniversary
On Saturday, June 20, downtown Kaiserslautern will once again transform into a paradise for classic car fans and lovers of historic vehicles: At the 18th Kaiserslautern Classics, which is part of the celebrations for this year’s 750th city anniversary, visitors can expect to see automotive treasures from past decades. The vehicle exhibition combines nostalgic charm with the diverse offerings of local retailers and restaurants, providing the perfect opportunity for a relaxed shopping spree in a special atmosphere.
In keeping with the theme of this year’s Kaiserslautern Classics, the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s take center stage. Dance groups in petticoat and rock ’n’ roll styles will create a genuine retro vibe and provide nostalgic entertainment with their performances and walk-around acts in the city center. To mark the 60th anniversary of the Opel plant in Kaiserslautern, the automaker will showcase vehicles from the 1960s starting at 10 a.m. on Marktstraße.
Starting at 10 a.m. in the Old Town, the Kaiserslautern Classics will be complemented by the large “Hövelmeyer” anniversary flea market. It stretches from St.-Martins-Platz along Klosterstraße to Steinstraße and invites visitors to browse, discover, and linger. Other highlights of the day:
4th ADAC Trifels Classic Car Rally
More than 100 participants will tackle the varied route, which is peppered with interesting stops and surprises. Organized by the Sportfahrer Union Kaiserslautern, the tour begins at 8:30 a.m. with a regularity test on the Opel plant grounds in Kaiserslautern. The route then continues via Meisenheim, Bad Sobernheim, and Grolsheim to Kleinkarlbach. The route then heads back to Kaiserslautern via the Wine Route, where participants are expected to arrive at Stiftsplatz around 4:00 p.m. There, the vehicles will be on display for visitors to view.
Fire Truck Exhibition
The Kaiserslautern Fire Department presents a unique exhibition of historic turntable ladders—from yesterday to today. Starting at 10:00 a.m., history and modern firefighting technology come together at the Neue Stadtmitte.
4th Vespa meeting in the city
Vespa fans will also get their money’s worth: Starting at 10 a.m., numerous enthusiasts of the legendary scooter will gather on Riesenstraße to showcase their lovingly maintained two-wheelers.
City tour in the vintage bus
The city tour in a nostalgic vintage bus offers a special experience. Passengers will learn interesting facts and trivia about the city of Barbarossa while enjoying the view from the panoramic bus. The meeting point is at the Kaiserslautern Tourist Information Office. The tour lasts about an hour and is offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in German, as well as at 11:30 a.m. in English. Music and Entertainment
Musically, the 18th Kaiserslautern Classics also offers a varied program with a nostalgic flair on two stages. The Honkytones will perform in front of the Stiftskirche from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., while Big Wave & the Bandits will provide rock ’n’ roll and rhythmic classics on Schillerplatz. In a slightly quieter but no less atmospheric setting, the “Forever Young” choir will perform at various locations in the city center starting at 11 a.m., delighting audiences with classics spanning several decades.
